Haisla Tourism gives you the unique opportunity to explore the Canadian Pacific Inland Coast aboard a replica of legendary cedar canoe use and built for the Haisla Nation.  For the North America’s Northwest Coast waters, the cedar ocean going canoe is the finest vessel ever made.   The ocean going canoe also known as a dugout canoe or West Coast Canoe, is the traditional way that Aboriginal people of Northwest of North America used to travel in their immense territory.  The original canoe is made of red cedar, considered the ideal wood for canoes because it is waterproof and resists rot. Many First Nations people from North America’s Northwest Coast call the red cedar "Tree of Life." It is was their source of clothing, shelter, and transportation. In the old days, carvers used the dried skin of dogfish as sandpaper to create a smooth outside surface.  For First Nations people every canoe had its own personality. They gave canoes names based on some special characteristics. Usually canoes are named after animals, like whales or eagles. Spirit of Haisla II is named after the Haisla Nation who are original  protectors and stewards of this territory since  time.without number

Aboard The Spirit of Haisla II, you will learn, discover and experiment with important parts of the cultural history of the Haisla Nation.  Paddle into the past on the beautiful Douglas Chanel as our  guides take you back in time.
