Kitamaat – Ocean-Going Canoe Adventure (3hrs)

For the America’s North West Coast water, the Cedar Ocean Going Canoe is the finest vessel ever made.   The Ocean Going Canoe also known as a dugout canoe or West Coast Canoe is the traditional way that First Nations people from Northwest of North America used to travel in their immense territory.  The original canoe was made of red cedar, considered the ideal wood for canoes because it is waterproof and resists rot. Many Native people from North American’s Northwest Coast call the red cedar "Tree of Life." It was their source of clothing, shelter, and transportation. In the old days, carvers used the dried skin of dogfish as sandpaper to create a smooth outside surface.  For First Nations people every canoe had its own personality. They give canoes names based on special characteristics. Usually canoes were named after animals, like whales or eagles.

Haisla Tourism gives you the unique opportunity to explore the Canadian Pacific Inland Coast aboard a replica of the legendary cedar canoe used and built by Haisla Nation.  Aboard of this canoe The Spirit of Haisla II, you will learn, discover and experiment with  important parts of cultural history of the Haisla Nation.  Paddle to the past on the beautiful Douglas Chanel as our guides take you back to the time of the Oolichan grease traders.  Enjoy the stories of this fascinating time in Canada’s history, while you view the abundant wildlife of the Canadian Pacific Inland Coast.  The stability of our 31 ft Ocean Going Canoes make this trip perfect for guests of all ages and abilities.
